Bethany Grizzaffi and her family found themselves directly in the path of Hurricane Ike last September. So Bethany, her husband and their two children, ages 7 and 8 — evacuated their home in Galveston and headed to safer ground in Houston. That’s when things got interesting.

“It was like having a lifeline to the outside world. OnStar was the only way we could contact our friends and out-of-state family to let them know we were safe and to find out what conditions were like in Galveston. We were both amazed and extremely grateful.”

When Bethany and her family returned to Galveston, what did they find?
“We had been living in a house that was built 40 years ago and it had 6 inches of water in it, which was pretty impressive because the house sits on stilts 9 feet above the ground. But when the hurricane hit, we were just two weeks away from moving into a brand-new home and — thanks to new construction codes in the area — our new home had minimal damage.
“OnStar was there for us when we needed it. I will definitely make sure my next car also has the service. When my husband locked his keys in our other car, I teased him: ‘Too bad you don’t have OnStar on that one.’”
