Buyers Review Their OnStar FMV Mirrors
When Kathy Berlin traded in her beloved Saturn earlier this year, she didn’t want to give up OnStar. But the service wasn’t available in the Ford Mustang she decided to purchase. That is, it wasn’t available until last month, when OnStar unveiled its new FMV (For My Vehicle) mirror, which provides many of the OnStar services Kathy had come to depend on.
She wanted her Mustang and her peace of mind
“My Saturn that I purchased in 2007 had OnStar, and that was one of the considerations for even purchasing the car,” says Kathy, who lives in Reserve, La., and writes course materials for a professional education company. “I do a lot of driving by myself and safety was a factor. The directions, the live Advisors, the built-in wireless connection were all used frequently. OnStar just made sense for me.”
With Saturns no longer available, Kathy settled on a Ford Mustang when she heard that OnStar FMV mirrors were on their way to retail stores. When the mirrors became available, she visited her local Best Buy, where hers was the first FMV mirror to be installed. The installation “generated a lot of interest in the store among employees,” she says. “People came back to check out the amazing event of OnStar being installed in a Ford Mustang.”
Now that Kathy is connected to OnStar again, she feels confident and safe. In addition to using the directions and the built-in hands-free calling capability she’s always appreciated with OnStar, she’s also using the added Bluetooth for her cell phone on a daily basis. “I am loving the convenience and the safety,” Kathy says. “I have sung OnStar praises for years. I don’t expect to stop now.”
An investment in her safety
Like Kathy, Linda Demarest was thrilled to find out that with an OnStar FMV mirror, she too can experience OnStar services and features even though she doesn’t drive a GM car. Linda, a director in a corporate benefits department in Hudson County, N.J., says she bought the OnStar FMV mirror for her 2004 Subaru Forester because she does a lot of long-distance driving alone. “I made the purchase so that I know that I’ll have the comfort of OnStar emergency services if I’m in a crash, if I am lost or if I don’t have my own cell phone service,” she says.
For Linda, the process of purchasing and installing the FMV mirror was “a breeze.” She bought the mirror at Best Buy and had it installed there while she was at work. “The guy at Best Buy explained everything to me, and before I drove home from work that night I hit the OnStar button and finalized my activation,” she says.
“I’m OnStar’s biggest spokesperson here in New York and New Jersey,” Linda says, after her first few weeks with the OnStar FMV mirror. “I view this as a real investment in my safety and that of my passengers. I watch what I spend, but how can you put a price on what OnStar provides you with, when you need it most?”

I would like to know if the mirror is available for a Ford PU 150 4×4 1998?
Hi June – We haven’t verified your Ford F-150′s model year yet with the FMV mirror, but if you’d like, you can visit an FMV retailer and they can take a look at your truck and let you know if the vehicle is compatible. The 1999 model is compatible, so it shouldn’t be an issue. You can use our Store Locator here http://www.facebook.com/onstar?sk=app_113254625414530 and enter your zip code to find a retailer nearest you. Let me know if you have any other questions! – Lisa
OnStar mirror for turn by turn directions..
i purchased one and had Best Buy install mid January 2012. After 3 weeks (2 weeks ago) i have had numerous problems. I was told there was update to system in mid Feb. Now I am told I cannot get turn by turn directions. I have spoken to the technical department over 6 times. they tell me they have updated my account yet it does not work. Has anyone else complained about the new OnStar mirror that was featured on The Apprentice?
I have had On Star staff tell me that my purchase did not include directions or that i was unable to receive
turn by turn. My OnStar system was working well until mid Feb. One of the OnStar assistants admitted she
had seen this occur many times after the mid February system update/change.
Hi Sharon, Sorry to hear you’ve had some trouble with your FMV mirror. Do you know which plan you have for your FMV mirror? Is it Safe and Sound, or Directions and Connections? (You can learn about the differences here: http://www.onstar.com/web/fmv/planspricing ) If you are a Directions & Connections subscriber you should be able to get Turn by Turn directions, and our system upgrade should not of affected this. If you can send me your OnStar account info here: http://bit.ly/saPpIb and I can look into what’s going on for you.
