What If She Didn’t Have OnStar?

OnStar can help in so many ways

Lixi Cacho and her son, JavonLixi Cacho’s plan was to drop off her 12-year-old son, Javon, at school and then head to work. She knew she needed gas, but as she says, “Gas was pretty high and there’s a station near work that’s always a few cents less, so I figured I’d save some money and fill up there.” But she didn’t make it that far and ended up stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Without OnStar: Lixi tries to call friends for help and doesn’t know where else to turn.

Without OnStar, Lixi would have had to rely on her cell phone and her friends — which is where she started. “I was on a side road with nothing around,” she says. “So I started to call people on my cell phone for help. But I had pretty much called everyone in my phone book, and no one was answering.” On top of that, her cell phone was cutting in and out.

“I really wasn’t sure what to do next. There wasn’t a gas station nearby, and I didn’t want to leave the car.”

With OnStar: Help is one button push away.

Lixi was just starting to panic when Javon, who was in the back seat, asked her why she didn’t push the OnStar button. Lixi told him that wasn’t part of the OnStar service. But he insisted it was. “Apparently Javon read the OnStar manual, which I neglected to,” Lixi says. “So I figured I’d try it.”

“I pushed the button and the OnStar Advisor couldn’t have been nicer.  She arranged for OnStar Roadside Assistance(1) to come out with some gas at no charge to me. She said it was part of my OnStar service, and she called me every 15 minutes until they arrived to make sure we were safe.”

Lixi was glad Javon was in the car with her and that he knew about the OnStar services. “If my son wasn’t there to tell me to call OnStar, I don’t know what I would have done,” she says. “OnStar turned a bad experience into a good one.”

Lixi has had OnStar for about 1½ years and says that until she ran out of gas, she’d only pushed the button once before — when she locked her purse in the trunk. But just a few days after she was rescued by OnStar Roadside Assistance, she saw a car on the side of the road with its hood on fire. She immediately pushed the OnStar emergency button and made a Good Samaritan call.

“OnStar does a lot of good for people,” Lixi says. “I’ll never buy another car without it.”
