Definitely the best thing that could be done right now is to have a remotelink app available for blackberries and windows phones. I cancelled my Onstar subscription simply because I can’t use the app with my windows phone. (the remotelink app was the only reason I had a subscription in the first place)

I couldn’t agree more. More and more companies need to look at the Windows Phone platform as a viable platform for the apps they release. While the adoption of WP has been slow, it’s now starting to gain momentum, especially in the uncertain times of Blackberry and RIM. I’ve started following OnStar on Twitter and will be ‘probing’ more and more for the Remote Link app. This would make the service that more useful to me as a subscriber.

I see they now have a Blackberry app, which is understandable since the platform has been around longer. Hopefully they have had a WP app in development right alongside it ready for release.

Yup, don’t plan on renewing after my free trial unless they get a WP app.

Why is it that we’re blaming GM? Who’s to say it’s not Microsoft causing the issue?

  4. Joseph Heath Wallis says:

OnStar, if you are going to issue cease and desist orders to 3rd party apps that are trying to offer a Windows Phone solution then you need to man up and provide your own app. It is poor taste to take down Volt Link if you won’t provide your own Windows Phone solution.

  5. gdinger says:

I agree. Was about to sign up for my Onstar account in my nee Avalanche, but I will wait for a Windows Phone app. Come on GM!

    >Why is it that we’re blaming GM? Who’s to say it’s not Microsoft causing the issue?
Maybe because the GM clowns sent a cease-and-desist letter to the guy that actually spent his time and created a useful app that GM didn’t bother to provide. http://www.wpcentral.com/volt-link-pulled-due-cease-request-no-longer-supported

  7. Justin Daniel Maetche says:

Come on GM/OnStar. There are lots of us Windows Phone users waiting for an app. I was using Volt Link and thought it was a great 3rd party solution. I believe that you sending a cease-and-desist letter was in poor taste, especially if there are no other solutions.

Another vote to get a WP app made for onstar. OnStar can even take the easy route and create an app just for WP8. It supports native code so it’s easy to port over from iOS. Better yet, they can write completely for Windows 8 and it’ll take little to have it running on Windows PHONE 8. Image how many people at work/home this winter can just sit at their Windows machine, start the OnStar app and start their cars to warm up a few minutes before they head out. From there, since WP8 can share code so easily with a Windows 8 app, OnStar can quickly expand their consumer reach by adapting it to a smaller screen… Not rocket science. I’m a software engineer and I know the potential of leveraging shared code across many things. Let’s hope someone at OnStar reads this and even understands…

I am annoyed that Onstar just sent a cease and desist letter to the maker of Volt Link, the Windows Phone app that brought the functionality of remote link to the WP masses. Onstar, I am really happy with my Chevy Volt, but I certainly will NOT renew my subscription if I can’t use remote link on my Windows Phone…

  10. LANMAN says:

Another vote for Windows Phone 8 remote link app!

  11. BBennett40 says:

Low blow to file a cease and desist for the developer who created a Windows Phone app in a market where you don’t exist! I only kept OnStar because of his app. I guess I have no reasons to keep you guys anymore.

  12. Daegalus says:

Way to go Onstar/GM. Volt Link was a perfectly good app doing something that your sorry asses couldn’t do. Then you go and C&D it so that all your customers with Volts and other GM cars get left out in the rain if they have a Windows Phone device.

You better be working on your own app, or you just alienated a lot of subscribers.

  13. frabman says:

That’s really the last straw… first voltstats.net, and now volt link? With no WP app and no plans for one?
I’m fed up, and I think I’m going to disable my onstar equipment in the car.

If I can’t use my data the way I want to, I’ll be da**ed if I’ll let them have it for free.
If they want it, they can pay me and maybe I’ll consider turning it back on… but only if by then they get their heads out of their a**es and properly respect their customers.

I was always uncomfortable with the amount and kind of data they collect, but since I was able to directly benefit from it I turned a blind eye.. but no more. There are many videos on youtube and other web sites that show how to completely disable the system, and I suggest you all consider turning that s**t off – because even w/o paying for the service they still track and collect all kinds of data.

I’ve been waiting for a remotelink app since I purchased my vehicle last summer, and if it wasn’t for volt-link i would have already cancelled my subscription. So i guess now’s the time to cancel until they start supporting Windows Phone.

    • techygeek82 says:

Do what I’ve been doing…start giving OnStar some social attention on Twitter. @OnStar. I’ve been complaining to them for months!!!

  15. Robert Phallan says:

Yep. still waiting for the Remotelink for Windows phone…….8.
Maybe they are just mad at Microsoft.

  16. geodan777 says:

Windows Phone app for remote link please! We like owning devices that are new and exciting…unlike old apple/android tech that hasn’t changed in years.

  17. Francois Giroux says:

Any updates for the new voltlink wp8 application ?!??!!!

    • johnfi says:

Also looking for an update for a app for Windows Phone please.

I was a Volt Link user before it was shut down and if an independent developer could write Volt Link I’m sure OnStar can have some of their developers come up with a great app for Windows Phone. Please let us know of any plans or other alternatives (ie Remote start from a web page).

      Thanks!

  18. Robert Frayser says:

Another paying subscriber cancelling because GM won’t bother to make a remotelink app for windows phone.

  19. Brian Cook says:

I would like a windows phone 8 app. But what I would like more is for them to open the api, and stop sending cease and desist orders to people building useful applications. I am paying for onstar, so I should have access to the API to write my own app if I want to. I should be able to use a third party app if I like it better than GMs. Next time I buy a car, every car is going to have this type of service and openness will be something I evaluate to determine what make / model I buy.

    • LisaJean says:

      Hi Brian -
Good news – The Windows compatible version of RemoteLink is coming soon. Stay tuned for more details!

About the API, we have opened up our API to independent developers. Here’s a link to learn more https://developer.gm.com/index.php. There you can have access to the APIs, stay up-to-date on developer news, and more.

      Hope that helps some!

      • Robert Barefoot says:

Lisa – do you know if this app will be wp7.8 compatible or just wp8? Also, are there any press releases or anything else regarding it yet? For someone who LOVED Volt link (for my Chevy Cruze), it was very disappointing for OnStar to go after someone that was providing a service that I had on my Android…a service that OnStar was not providing.

I’m actually glad I read this, as I was about to call and cancel my paid OnStar subscription…perhaps there is hope after all.

        • LisaJean says:

Hi Robert – Once the app is released it will be compatible with Windows Phone 7 and newer OS. Hope that helps!

          • John D Kidd Jr says:

LisaJean, any updates on availability? I’m sure by now you and your superiors have noticed how many of us want this and are willing to cancel or not renew our plans over it.

Heck, if you give me access to the remote api, I’ll do all the work for you.

          • LisaJean says:

We have heard our subscribers John, I apologize for the frustration but we thank you for your patience. It is coming soon!

      • Sam Wille says:

Where is the Windows Phone app????

  20. Robert Barefoot says:

I’m pretty sure that you guys won’t comment on “release dates”, but is it possible to get a “summer 13″, “some time in 2013″, or a “don’t hold your breath…but before 2100″? :)

  21. Sam Wille says:

Well we are in Q2 2013 and the application is in “active development”. That means it is being worked on, but no indication of its intensity or projected completion date. I’m fine with “it will be available in Q3 2013 or Q4 2013″ but not with “soon”. Soon to some is minutes, hours, perhaps more reasonably days, weeks and months. or soon could be a lot further than that.
